ArkDes

(Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design)
ArkDes is Stockholm's architecture and design museum. The museum's collection contains over 4 million objects such as books, magazines, models, photographs and drawings. It was formed in the 1950's to help conserve and catalogue modern architecture. It has since take on a special assignment from the Swedish Ministry of Culture to promote and further develop architecture and design in Swedish culture. In 2009 the museum expanded its responsibility to include other design areas beyond architecture.
Surrounding area: The museum is located on Skeppsholmen near Stockholm center. It has a beautiful view on Djurgården. ArkDes is located in the same building as The Museum of Modern Art and shares a lot of the facilities.
Age groups: The museum is most appropriate for children from 3 years old.
Exhibits: The museum is relatively small, occupying two large rooms, but that has not limited its inventive use of space. There is a children's play room with a small climbing structure.

Kiruna Forever (until February 7, 2021)

explores the city of Kiruna in Sweden which is undergoing an unprecedented change. The entire city is currently being moved by 3 kilometres because of the expanding iron mine that city is built around. The exhibit looks at the work of city planners, architects, and artists as the cultural heritage of this city undergoes a seismic shift.

Architecture in Sweden (until December 31, 2021)

explores over 1000 years of construction in Sweden. The museum contains models, photos, and original materials from a millennium of city planning and construction. Everything is from the ArkDes archives.

Weird Sensation Feels Good (until December 31, 2021)

is an exhibition about ASMR. It features visual, tactile, and aural experiences. ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) has moved from obscurity to pop culture in recent years and this is the exhibition dedicated to it.

Library and Collections

The museum also contains Sweden's largest library dedicated to architecture and design. It functions as a standard lending library and is accessible as part of Stockholm's library network. Read more about ArkDes' library here.

Activities:
  • ArkDes hosts an annual gingerbread house competition and displays the entries in an exhibition.

Private events & parties: The museum space is available for private events.

Restaurant & picnic area: The museum has a small café called Café Blom. it closes 30 minutes before the museum does. ArkDes also shares the restaurant with The Museum of Modern Art (Read more about menus or book a table the museum restaurant here).
The museum has an indoor picnic area on the first floor if you want to bring your own lunch or snack.

Strollers & storage: There is a coat check in the museum's main foyer as well as rental lockers which are refunded after use.
